Dr. Baxter D. Montgomery (1964–2025) was a visionary cardiologist who revolutionized the way we approach chronic disease by integrating advanced cardiology with plant-based nutrition. Through his compassionate care, pioneering medical leadership, and commitment to lifestyle-driven healing, Dr. Montgomery empowered thousands to reclaim their health and live fuller lives.
As the founder of Montgomery Heart & Wellness (est. 1997), Dr. Montgomery led with a bold and innovative approach, which helped patients reverse chronic illnesses, not just with procedures and prescriptions, but with nutrition, education, and personal accountability. His work reached not only patients but also physicians, researchers, and thought leaders.
For more than two decades, Dr. Montgomery served as a teacher, clinician, and advocate. He held academic appointments at UTHealth Houston, practiced at Memorial Hermann Hospital, and trained countless students and colleagues. He also served as executive director of the Johnnie and Aubary Montgomery Institute of Medical Education and Research, named after his parents, and sat on the advisory board of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, advancing both equity and innovation in healthcare.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Montgomery was a devoted father to four children and a man of deep faith, having served nearly two decades as a Sunday School teacher at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. He enjoyed cooking, engaging in political debates, watching movies, bike riding, enjoying the outdoors, and going for walks. His joy for life was infectious and unforgettable.
On May 24, 2025, Dr. Montgomery passed away, and though his physical presence is gone, his mission continues through every patient, practitioner, and organization carrying forward the power of lifestyle medicine.
Dr. Montgomery’s work was about more than medicine. It was about the belief that healing is possible. Every time we choose to take control of our health and support care rooted in compassion, we honor his legacy and help it grow.
