Let’s Talk About the Benefits of a Healthy Diet

For the last of my pre-symposium posts, let’s talk about the benefits of a healthy diet. Being “healthy” can mean many different things depending on who you ask, but I want to focus on not only being healthy in terms of weight, but also in terms of your cardiovascular health.

To get started, while writing this post, a patient came up to me and told me that over the past five months, following a plant-based diet, he has lost 90 pounds. Yes, I did just say that he has lost 90 pounds. That’s incredibly impressive! Now, is this realistic for everyone? The answer to that is certainly no. Everyone’s body is different, and we each have our own weight goals and healthy weight number. But, through following this same way of eating, there are many other health benefits that you can experience regardless of your weight or health goals.

Cardiovascular Statistics

Pause with me for a minute to take a look at these statistics on cardiovascular disease from the American Heart Association, based on 2007 data:

  • About 452 million people die each year from CHD.
  • Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the U.S.
  • 1.26 million Americans are estimated to suffer an initial or recurrent heart attack each year.
  • Over 10 million people suffer from angina pectoris—symptoms caused by poor blood circulation to the heart.
  • It is estimated that 500,000 new cases of stable angina occur each year.
  • 17.6 million people alive today have a history of heart attack, angina pectoris, or both.
  • Approximately 7.9 million Americans age 20 and older have experienced a prior heart attack.

What does this have to do with eating healthy?

You might be wondering what this has to do with healthy eating? Cardiovascular disease is associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. New research is even suggesting a link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease.  However, switching to a plant-based diet can help reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease by strengthening your numbers (BMI,cholesterolblood pressure). Thus, a healthy diet has everything to do with your cardiovascular health! We want to achieve our best numbers, ideally, and eating a healthy diet can help us do just that. Here are some small changes that you can make to get you going.

  1. Add fruits and vegetables into your diet.
  2. Replace meat with protein sources like beans.
  3. Begin cutting animal-based products from your diet.

I want you to get some great ideas to get you started on eating a plant-based diet, so I’ve added some great video recipes HERE and HERE. If you’re in the Houston area, stop by our Garden Kitchen restaurant to pick up a salad, smoothie, or even a dessert. Our peach cobbler is excellent—as well as vegan. Need some help learning your way around the kitchen? Stop by and ask our chefs for advice about food preparation, tools, or even just for some recipe tips. Great news—we’ll even be offering our foods in local grocery stores soon.

Want more technical information—Dr. M gets into the technical aspects for true health HERE, but here are a few words of wisdom on the whole, raw, live, plant-based foods philosophy from Dr. Montgomery, himself.
“Nature has provided us with the best nutrition possible. To maximize nutritional benefits, it’s best to eat food in its most natural state. For example, it’s better to eat a fresh apple than to drink processed apple juice with sugar. “Whole food” means eating the whole apple rather than some derivative. “Live food” means having it as fresh as possible without any processing. When you eat food in this state you will get many more vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytochemcials and other benefits from the food.”—Dr. Baxter Montgomery, MD
