Let’s Talk About Diabetes

Next on my list of topics in the “Let’s Talk About…” series is diabetes. If you haven’t assessed your risk yet, go HERE to check out your risk factors. Diabetes is, according to the American Diabetes Association, a “group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from defects in the body’s ability to produce and/or use insulin.”  While diabetes is a disease that can be managed, far too many people don’t take diabetes seriously. The consequences of uncontrolled diabetes can be extremely serious and potentially even deadly.

What you should know

There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1, mostly seen in children and young adults and often referred to as juvenile diabetes, is caused by genetics and other unknown factors, according to the American Diabetes Association. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, generally occurs due to a combination of genetic factors as well as lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, and weight management, to name a few). The most common type of diabetes, type 2 is related to insulin resistance. The body doesn’t use insulin properly, beginning with an overproduction, leading eventually to a resistance, causing blood sugar levels to  remain uncontrolled. Adults should be aware of their risk factors for type 2 diabetes, particularly those associated with exercise, diet, and weight as those are factors that can be modified. There are many myths out there about diabetes. I’ll let the American Diabetes Association address the diabetes myths, but you should definitely check them out.

Facts about diabetes from the American Diabetes Assocation

  1. Diabetes can be deadly, contributing to over 231,000 deaths in the year 2007.
  2. Diabetes can lead to impaired and loss of vision including blindness. Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults aged 20–74 years.
  3. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure accounting for 44% of the new cases in 2008.
  4. More facts can be found on the CDC’s National Diabetes Fact Sheet

The CDC estimates, according to the American Diabetes Association, that 79 million people in the United States have prediabetes. Unfortunately, many of these people don’t know that they’re at risk for developing diabetes and that there are steps that they can take to lower their risk.

Reversing Diabetes

You may think that diabetes is something you’re stuck with for the rest of your life upon diagnosis. However, Dr. Montgomery is reversing diabetes, naturally through his food classification levels and Nutritional Boot Camps. He even has a specific Diabetes Nutritional Guide complete with recipes and information for those who have already been diagnosed with diabetes.

Join us this Saturday, October 12th for our 5th Annual Natural Health Symposium. Each of the very important health issues discussed in this post, as well as in the “Let’s Talk About…” series will be discussed.
