Local Event Raises Awareness of Relationship Between Food and Health

Renowned Doctors from Across the Nation Present to Houston Crowd

HOUSTON ― February 22, 2015 ― On February 21, more than 200 attendees filled the seats of the Kingdom Builders Center’s main auditorium for the Montgomery Heart & Wellness 6th Annual Health Summit. Doctors from across the nation presented on health issues facing Americans today as well as the recuperative and preventative effects of a healthy diet.

According to Dr. Baxter Montgomery, Health Summit host and founder of Montgomery Heart & Wellness, 70% of U.S. citizens are on prescription medications for things that could be prevented by a plant-based diet ― a statistic he hopes events like the one held on February 21st will help to lower.

Keynote speaker Dr. Kim Allan Williams, the president-elect of the American College of Cardiology, educated the audience on the relationship between an unhealthy diet and chronic illnesses that could potentially lead to death, touting the benefits of a plant-based diet.

Other event highlights included Dr. Terry Mason, Chief Medical Officer of the Cook County Health and Hospitals System and nationally renowned health educator, discussing the need for affordable access to healthy, organic foods for all people and director of research for True North Health Center Doug Lisle presenting on the relationship between stress and food cravings.

Lunchtime meals were provided by The Garden Kitchen, which specializes in designing delicious, healthy alternatives to traditional comfort foods. During lunch breakout sessions, attendees either participated in food preparation demonstrations by Chef AJ and Chef Babette, fitness presentations, or an introduction to the Montgomery Heart & Wellness Food Prescription Plan.

“It’s so important to the health and future of our nation that we expose the general public to these medical truths. More and more research is showing that food is both culprit, in the case of processed products ubiquitous in the American diet, and savior, when consumed in its natural, intended state,” said Dr. Montgomery. “I am so grateful to all of the professionals and public who came out for this event. I believe we truly made a difference in the lives of Houstonians today.”

The full list of guest speakers at the event included president-elect of the American College of Cardiology Dr. Kim Allan Williams; practicing general surgeon Dr. Kristofer Charlton-Ouw; physician, author and internationally recognized professional speaker Dr. Michael Greger; Chief Medical Officer of the Cook County Health and Hospitals System and nationally renowned health educator Dr. Terry Mason; director of research for True North Health Center Doug Lisle, Ph.D.; and founder of Montgomery Heart & Wellness and practicing cardiologist Dr. Baxter Montgomery.
